How this holiday pay estimate is calculated

Holiday pay is estimated from the selected Irish working-time method and the pay/work pattern entered.

  1. The calculator checks the selected holiday pay method or employment pattern.
  2. Gross pay, hours, days, or months are converted into the relevant annual leave estimate.
  3. The result is shown as estimated holiday entitlement and/or holiday pay based on the selected tab.
  4. The estimate is intended for planning and does not replace employer payroll records.

How annual leave and holiday pay work in Ireland

This calculator estimates statutory annual leave using the Irish 4-week, 1/3-week-per-qualifying-month, and 8%-of-hours methods. It can also estimate the value of holiday hours and unused annual leave due when employment ends.

Irish statutory annual leave can be calculated by three methods: 4 working weeks where the employee works at least 1,365 hours in a leave year unless they changed employment, 1/3 of a working week for each month with at least 117 hours worked, or 8% of hours worked, subject to a maximum of four working weeks.

Holiday pay is normally based on the employee’s normal weekly rate. If pay varies, employers may need to use an average-pay approach. Payment instead of taking statutory annual leave is generally only relevant when employment ends and there is accrued untaken leave.

Public holidays are separate. This tool focuses on annual leave and holiday pay estimates. Public holiday benefits and employer-specific contractual leave rules should be checked separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is annual leave calculated in Ireland?
Irish annual leave is usually worked out using one of three statutory methods: 4 working weeks when the 1,365-hour threshold is met, 1/3 of a working week for each month with at least 117 hours worked, or 8% of hours worked in the leave year, subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks.
Does the 8% method always apply?
No. The 8% method is only one of the statutory accrual methods. If another statutory method gives a better result, that better entitlement should apply, up to the statutory maximum of 4 working weeks.
Do part-time or casual workers get annual leave?
Yes. Annual leave entitlement starts from the beginning of employment and applies to full-time, part-time, temporary, and casual workers.
What happens if I leave my job with untaken annual leave?
If employment ends before all accrued statutory leave is taken, the employee should normally be paid compensation for the untaken balance.
Can annual leave build up during certified sick leave?
Yes. Statutory annual leave continues to accrue during certified sick leave, and where illness prevents the leave being used in time, special carryover rules can apply.
Does this calculator replace payroll or legal advice?
No. It is a planning tool based on standard Irish annual leave rules. Contracts, sectoral rules, Sunday patterns, and employer policies can increase entitlements or change how holiday pay is applied in practice.
