About This VAT Calculator

This Ireland VAT calculator helps you add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a gross amount using the current Irish VAT rates. It is designed for quick estimates only and does not determine the correct VAT treatment of your supply.

Current Irish VAT rates. Revenue currently lists a standard rate of 23%, a reduced rate of 13.5%, a second reduced rate of 9%, a livestock rate of 4.8%, and a zero rate. This calculator includes the common Irish rates used for quick planning and also lets you test a custom rate where needed.

VAT rate selection matters. Most goods and services are taxed at the standard rate, while some categories qualify for reduced, second reduced, zero, or exempt treatment. This tool does not classify your product or service for you, so you should confirm the correct rate with Revenue guidance or your accountant before relying on a final figure.

Zero-rated is not the same as exempt. A zero-rated supply is still a taxable supply at 0%, while exempt activities follow different rules and are not handled by this calculator. Revenue guidance notes that certain activities such as financial services, health, education, public transport, sporting events, and water supplies are VAT exempt.

This calculator is for estimation and planning only. It does not replace Revenue guidance, bookkeeping advice, or a professional VAT review for your specific transaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Irish VAT rates does this calculator support?
Revenue currently lists the main Irish VAT rates as 23%, 13.5%, 9%, 4.8%, and 0%. This calculator includes the common rates used for quick VAT estimates and also lets you test a custom rate.
Should I enter the price before VAT or after VAT?
Use the Add VAT tab when you have a net amount excluding VAT. Use the Remove VAT tab when you have a gross amount including VAT and want to work back to the net figure and VAT portion.
Is zero-rated the same as VAT exempt?
No. Zero-rated supplies are still taxable supplies at 0%, while exempt activities follow different VAT rules and are not handled by this calculator.
Can I use this calculator for every type of product or service?
It is a planning tool only. You still need to confirm the correct VAT treatment of your supply with Revenue guidance or professional advice because rate classification can depend on the exact goods or services involved.
Why does the calculator have a custom VAT rate option?
A custom rate can help when you want to test a scenario, model a historical change, or work with a rate outside the main quick-select buttons. You should still verify the actual rate that applies to your supply.
Does this calculator deal with VAT exemptions or registration thresholds?
No. It is not a VAT registration or compliance tool. It does not determine exemptions, thresholds, place-of-supply rules, or sector-specific VAT treatment.
