How overtime pay works in Ireland

This calculator estimates gross overtime pay using the hourly rate, overtime hours, multiplier, and optional unpaid-break deduction you enter. It is a planning tool only and does not decide whether overtime or a particular premium rate is legally owed in your job.

In Ireland, there is no single universal statutory overtime rate such as 1.5x or 2.0x for every worker. Overtime pay is usually set by your contract of employment, workplace policy, collective agreement, Employment Regulation Order, Sectoral Employment Order, or other terms that apply in your sector.

Sunday work can also attract a premium where that requirement has not already been taken into account in the normal rate of pay. Because overtime arrangements vary between employers, this estimator is best used to model gross pay scenarios and then compare the result with your payslip or agreed workplace terms.

How This Calculator Works

1
Choose the overtime type and enter your hourly rate plus the number of overtime hours worked.
2
Pick the multiplier your employer uses, such as 1.25x, 1.5x, 2.0x, or enter a custom premium rate.
3
If unpaid breaks reduce the hours you should be paid for, switch on break deduction and enter the break minutes and number of shifts.
4
The calculator works out payable overtime hours and shows the gross overtime estimate before PAYE, USC, and PRSI deductions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is overtime pay legally required in Ireland?
Irish employment law does not create one general statutory right to overtime pay. In most cases, overtime pay depends on your contract, sectoral rules, collective agreements, or employer policy.
Is there a fixed legal overtime rate like 1.5x or 2.0x?
No. There is no single universal overtime multiplier set by Irish law for all jobs. This calculator lets you choose the multiplier that applies to your own workplace arrangement.
How does Sunday premium work in Ireland?
If Sunday working is not already built into the rate of pay, an employee is generally entitled to compensation such as an allowance, an increased rate, paid time off, or a mix of these. The exact form can vary.
Are unpaid breaks deducted from paid working time?
Rest-break rules exist in Irish working-time law, but payment for breaks is not a general statutory entitlement. This is why the calculator includes an optional unpaid-break deduction.
Can part-time workers qualify for overtime pay?
Yes, depending on the workplace rules. Part-time workers should not be treated less favourably than comparable full-time workers, so overtime arrangements may still apply once the relevant threshold is reached.
Does this calculator show gross pay or take-home pay?
It shows a gross overtime estimate only. Use your PAYE, USC, PRSI, or net salary calculator if you also want to estimate deductions and take-home pay.
